In the 2010-11 season, Werder Bremen signed experienced French defender Mikaël Silvestre on a free transfer after his contract with Arsenal expired. The former Manchester United and Inter Milan player was brought in to strengthen Bremen's backline, but his time at the club was largely disappointing. Silvestre struggled with form and consistency, as Werder endured a difficult campaign, finishing 13th in the Bundesliga and failing to qualify for European competition.
