June 22, 1994 1994 World Cup - USA vs Colombia

The 90's were an era in which Colombia had some of its strongest teams in the international scene. The road to the 1994 World Cup proved to be very commanding, including a win against Argentina in 1993 that resulted in 5-0, therefore the team created a lot of expectation from its country. Most notable players in this squad included Carlos Valderrama (#10), Faustino Asprilla (#21) and Andrés Escobar (#2). Unfortunately, they failed to get out of the group stage despite their commanding wins in qualifiers and the tournament aftermath put them on the map of global football. In their second match, played against the US, they found themselves trailing 1-0 due to an Escobar tackle that unluckily resulted in an own goal. Having already lost two games, getting through to the next round was impossible but they won 2-0 against Switzerland, nonetheless. Soon after returning home, Escobar was murdered reportedly as a retaliation for having scored the own goal, which contributed to the team's elimination from the tournament.
