In the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Landon Donovan entered the tournament as the face of U.S. soccer, carrying the weight of expectation after his breakout performance in 2002. As one of the squad’s most experienced and creative players, he was expected to lead the attack, but both he and the U.S. Men's National Team (USMNT) struggled in a tough Group E alongside Italy, Ghana, and the Czech Republic. Donovan, usually known for his incisive runs and playmaking ability, failed to register a single goal or assist, as the U.S. managed just one point in three matches, drawing against eventual champions Italy but suffering losses to the Czechs and Ghanaians.
