In the 2001-02 season, Claudio Reyna became a key figure for Sunderland after joining from Rangers in December 2001 for a then-club-record fee of £4 million. The American midfielder arrived with a reputation for his composure, versatility, and ability to control the tempo of the game. Playing under Peter Reid, Reyna slotted seamlessly into Sunderland’s midfield, bringing much-needed technical quality to a side battling for consistency in the Premier League. His ability to link defense and attack, combined with his leadership, made him a vital presence as Sunderland fought to stay clear of relegation. Despite some strong performances, the club struggled in the second half of the season, finishing 17th, just above the drop zone. Reyna’s campaign was cut short due to a knee injury in April, but he had already proven his value as one of the most technically gifted midfielders to play for Sunderland during that era.
