The 2002-03 season was a turbulent one for Crystal Palace, as the club experienced inconsistency both on and off the pitch in the First Division (now the EFL Championship). Managed by Trevor Francis at the start of the campaign, Palace struggled to find stability, leading to his departure in April 2003, with Steve Kember taking over for the final games. Despite boasting talented players like Andy Johnson, Dougie Freedman, and Julian Gray, the team finished in mid-table, ending the season in 14th place. While they showed glimpses of attacking quality, inconsistency prevented them from mounting a serious promotion challenge. One of the highlights of the season was their FA Cup run, where they knocked out Liverpool at Anfield in the fourth round before being eliminated by Leeds United. Though the campaign was largely unremarkable, it set the stage for their promotion push the following season under Iain Dowie, culminating in their return to the Premier League in 2004.
