The 2002 FIFA World Cup was a major disappointment for Argentina, as the team, considered one of the tournament favorites, suffered a shocking group-stage exit. Under coach Marcelo Bielsa, Argentina had a squad packed with talent, including Gabriel Batistuta, Juan Sebastián Verón, and Hernán Crespo, but they failed to progress past a tough group featuring England, Sweden, and Nigeria. Surprisingly, one of the biggest omissions from the squad was legendary right-back Javier Zanetti, who had been a key player for Argentina for years. Bielsa controversially left Zanetti out in favor of Claudio Caniggia, a decision that was widely criticized, especially as Argentina struggled with balance on the right side of the pitch. Given his experience, defensive solidity, and ability to contribute in attack, many believe Zanetti’s presence could have helped Argentina avoid their early exit. Despite this setback, Zanetti went on to have a long and distinguished international career, becoming Argentina’s most-capped player for many years.
