During the 2004–05 season, Norwich City competed in the Premier League after earning promotion as First Division champions the previous year. In an effort to bolster their survival hopes, the club signed striker Dean Ashton from Crewe Alexandra in the January transfer window for a then-club-record fee of £3 million. Ashton made an immediate impact, scoring seven goals in 16 league appearances, including crucial strikes against Southampton and Birmingham City. Despite his efforts, Norwich struggled defensively and were ultimately relegated on the final day of the season after a crushing 6-0 defeat to Fulham. Ashton's performances, however, established him as a rising talent, and he would go on to earn a big move to West Ham United in 2006.
